Petra tou Romiou Beach
Petra tou Romiou Beach is the pebble strand beneath the sea-stacks south of Paphos, the same coast where, by tradition, Aphrodite came ashore from the foam. The setting is dramatic. Limestone cliffs rise on either side, the dark-blue water deepens fast from the shingle, and the three sea-stacks frame the bay. The location lends itself particularly well to photography.
The beach sits below the Petra tou Romiou viewpoint, reached by a footpath and steps down from the cliff-top parking. A visit takes an hour to ninety minutes including the descent and return climb.

A Beach Beneath the Myth
The beach itself is pebble and small stone — not sand. The shingle is comfortable enough underfoot in soft shoes, less so barefoot. Three sea-stacks rise from the bay: the largest, the central, and a smaller stack to the south. The middle one is the most photographed, the one most travellers picture when they think of Aphrodite's birthplace.
Wild thyme grows on the cliffs above. The breeze off the sea is constant. In the late afternoon, the cliffs catch a warm sunlit colour that holds for the half-hour before sunset.

Swimming Safely
Two practical things. First, the currents off the rocks here are real, and the bottom shelves quickly from the beach. Stay close to the shore unless you are a strong swimmer, and do not swim out to the central sea-stack: it is further than it looks and the currents around it are unpredictable. Second, the water is colder than the sheltered bays of Coral Bay and Kato Paphos, particularly outside the peak summer months.
There are no lifeguards. The beach is unsupervised year-round.

From Annabelle
Petra tou Romiou Beach is a 25-minute drive south-east of Annabelle along the B6 coast road and the new coastal road toward Limassol. Reception will arrange a taxi or private car. Sunset is the time most worth aiming for — for the light on the rocks, the warm cliff colour, and the gradual emptying of the daytime crowd.
Pair the beach with a visit to the archaeological viewpoint at the top — they are the same place, different intent.
